What is Post Partum Hair Loss?

Pregnancy hair is amazing, your locks become the stuff of fashion magazines. Within 3 to 6 months of baby arriving it starts falling out everywhere… and we do mean everywhere.
The good news is post partum hair loss is temporary, but you may experience some visible thinning of your hair in sections such as around the hairline or temple points.
During pregnancy, your normal rate of hair loss decreases due to high levels of estrogen. Hair shedding is normal and you can lose between 50-150 hairs per day, but during pregnancy this decreases significantly. But you know the saying… what goes up must come down.
Once you give birth your hormones drop dramatically and your hair catches up for lost time (9 months to be exact), and falls out at a much faster rate. The reason this results in visible patches of fine hair is the hair doesn’t have time to grow along with the hair that is shedding.

Can Post Partum Hair Loss be Avoided?

Probably not! But getting lots of sleep, and prioritising protein and B vitamins in your diet can help.
You can also use hair care products such as Regrow’s Shampoo & Conditioner which block DHT (a stress-caused hormone that causes hair loss), as well as stimulates hair growth with natural botanical ingredients.

When to Seek Support for Post Partum Hair Loss

Our advice to anyone with any type of hair loss is to address it in the early stages as this offers the best chance to rewaken the follicles. Prevention and early intervention is best for any form of hair loss including post partum hair loss.
One of the reasons for this is post partum hair loss can trigger female pattern baldness should you have the genetics, especially as your body is under stress with early motherhood. Using hair care products that encourage circulation is crucial as even when you’re shedding it keeps the follicles active.
If you are still experiencing increased hair loss after a year, it might be time to speak to your doctor for extra support to get your hair back to its usual, glorious state!

Styling Tips for Fine Hair:

  • Use a shampoo and conditioner designed to add volume (such as Regrow Shampoo & Conditioner
  • Only condition the ends of your hair and avoid adding any weight to the roots
  • Avoid leave in conditioner treatments as they can coat the hair with silicone and add weight to the hair making it look less voluminous
  • Do not brush your hair when wet, or style with heat as these two activities can stress your hair and cause more damage
  • Say no to chemical-based hair care products, as well as colouring treatments
  • As easy and tempting as they are, do not put your hair into a mum bum or high ponytail. These hairstyles cause extra hair shedding and can worsen your post partum hair loss.
